Going with Hadvar allows you to freely take the ingots and some of the armor from outside his uncle Alvor's house (they can always be stolen once night comes though if going with Ralof). Going with Ralof (in my opinion) provides more/better selling loot once in Riverwood.

Remember: both Ralof and Hadvar enter the same building on different sides. Hadvar's family has better valuable free stuff than Ralof's, and a better home with a basement to use anytime. However, Ralof's family member (Hod) gets stuck and never comes out of his home, so not deciding to follow Ralof early-game could result in a crime while trying to get to him to sell or to buy wood from him.
It always felt to me like the ability to follow Ralof was sort of tacked on after the fact, maybe to add to the illusion of choice. -Player enters keep with Ralof/Hadvar (whoever got choosen)-Hadvar/Ralof (who didn't): For gods' sake-! Ugh! -moves to follow after the player and childhood friend giving in only to be blocked off by one of Alduin's attack forcing them to find a new way out of Helgen.

You get more gold from dead Imperial loot, You get revenge on the dumb Imperial captain bitch, You also get access to heavy armor earlier because going with Hadvar doesn't have any lootable heavy armor. They both head towards the Helgen keep but if you go with Ralof, you never see Hadvar again but if you go with Hadvar you never see Ralof again. Both paths cross at the very entrance of the Helgen keep but yet you never see the other person.
